You’re heading to Hawaii …. but which island?
Natural beauty might as well be the meaning of Hawaii, because there’s nowhere else in the world quite like it. Soaring snow-capped peaks, mighty, angry volcanoes, stunning and sparkling beaches, and roaring waves … this is Mother Nature at her most impressive.
When you originally decide to go to Hawaii, you might not realise the choice laid out before you, because this isn’t simply a ‘which destination’ kind of decision, this is a ‘which island’ kind of decision.
Let’s take a look at the main islands in the chain, so you can decide which one fits your personality best.
The oldest island in the chain, with stunning and dramatic scenery. Perfect for photography fans, walkers, or those who simply want to relax in natural surroundings to take your breath away. Kokee State Park and Waimea Canyon are must visits, which is also referred to as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. Wailua Falls and the Kalalau Trail complete the places you simply must check out during your stay. Is this is the island for you?
The second largest island, and some say it is home to the best beaches. Another natural wonder, but then all of the islands are in their own way, Maui is famous for whale watching, so if wildlife is your bag, then this could be your island. Haleakala National Park is a must visit, home to the island’s highest peak, with stunning sunsets and sunrises. Makena Beach State Park is also where that amazing beach is, and who can resist a jaw-dropping beach?
The Big Island
Whilst the name might not sound that exotic, the island itself is beauty incarnate. The biggest island in the chain, as the name suggests, this is where you’ll see every kind of landscape known to man – snow-capped mountains, raging waterfalls, lush rainforests, neat botanical gardens, stunning beaches, and yes, the volcanoes. The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park shows the brute force of nature, and it really is quite the sight, in fact, quite a pull to this varied island.
Finally, our list is concluded with what is undoubtedly the party island. Oahu is the most populated island, and home to the famous Waikiki Beach, Honolulu (the capital), as well as nature and history, with Pearl Harbour of course. The North Shore is where you’ll find surfer dudes trying their luck on the huge waves, and there seems to be a laid-back party on every corner. If you want a vibrant island, then Oahu is your choice.
The four main islands in the chain, with a few smaller ones too, are varied, although each of them are simply stunning. Beauty is their main similarity, so if beauty is all you’re after, then your decision will be a hard one! It all comes down to what you’re looking for, but if you’re wanting vibrant night-life, Oahu is your place; and if you’re wanting to check out nature at its very best, then The Big Island is for you.
The choice is yours.
