Llangammarch Wells tourist information
Llangammarch Wells Wales
The community of Llangammarch is eight miles west of Builth Wells in the Brecknock division of the county of Powys and at the junction of the rivers Cammarch and Irfon. The community (population 475) comprises the villages of Llangammarch, Cefngorwydd and Tirabad. Llangammarch is overlooked in the south-east by the Mynydd Eppynt which rises abruptly to 400 metres plus and is used for Army training
A settlement has existed here for hundreds of years, partly at least, because it is the meeting point of two rivers and was on some of the old Drovers routes. Expansion occurred when the railway appeared in 1863 and when the area achieved popularity as a Spa in the latter years of the 19th century and the early part of the 20th century. John Penry, who was martyred in the reign of Queen Elizabeth I for his religious beliefs, lived here at Cefnbrith (still occupied as a farmhouse). Several writers are buried in the Churchyard or commemorated in the Church, notably Theophilus Jones and James Howells.
