Longview Texas

Longview is proud to be the hub of the Texas Lake Country for leisure travel, outdoor recreation and shopping. Famous for its fabulous festivals, fine dining and historic downtown, Longview is the perfect destination in East Texas.

Many of our guests enjoy our lakes for excellent fishing, or exciting water skiing and boating. Others travel hundreds of miles for the chance to ride their bicycles over the rolling hills. Longview has become a winter haven for friends from northern states who travel Amtrak's Texas Eagle to spend a few days cycling in our mild climate.

Opportunities to shop for authentic antiques, arts, crafts and original pottery abound. Longview's restaurants transform an ordinary meal into a dining delight. Treat yourself to several of Longview's unusual and special dining experiences.

Each June, our downtown streets fill with people of all ages who come to experience AlleyFest - the best art, music, sports, food and children's festival in Texas. In mid-July, Longview's motels and campgrounds fill up with those who come to enjoy the spectacular Great Texas Balloon Race. September, the Gregg County Historical Museum presents Dalton Days and brings the Wild West to East Texas.

Spring wildflowers and Autumn colors transform the Texas Lake Country around Longview into a prime travel destination. Visitors from all over Texas visit the region to enjoy the natural beauty.

The city was founded April 7, 1870 by O.H.Methvin, a successful farmer who "made a deal" with the Southern Pacific Railroad to deed 100 acres of land for the price of one gold dollar with the stipulation that the railroad build a town on the land. This 100 acres became the site of the Longview, Texas. The city plat, laid out by the railroad established Central (now called Center) Street and Tyler Street intersection as the meeting point for East/West and North/South.

The city received its name when railroad surveyors, standing on Mr. Methvin's front porch on top of Rock Hill remarked on the "long view " one had from that vantage point. The "One Hundred Acres of Heritage" commemorate Longview's beginning. Downtown Longview is the sight for several exciting events and festivals including: AlleyFest, Dalton Days, Light-Up-Longview, Living History Christmas and Longview's popular Christmas Parade.

Today, Longview boasts a strong growing economy. A friendly vital community that's attracting the attention of industries and businesses from around the nation and the world. Longview's weather makes it a "year-round" city and its healthy economy reflects a hard-working, fun-loving population.

Longview is located on Interstate 5, approximately 47 miles north of Portland and 135 miles south of Seattle. The city is nestled between the banks of the Columbia and Cowlitz Rivers and is only a short 90-minute drive west to the Pacific Ocean or east to the Cascade mountains. On clear days, Mt.
