Over a century later, Bremerton's Puget Sound Naval Shipyard continues to service U.S. Navy ships and its yard employs 8,000 civilians and as many active duty military work aboard ships or for the yard's attendant commands.
This military influence has fostered a highly technical work force. An effort by the business community to diversify the economy is balancing employment in other sectors such as service, retail, medical, wholesale, manufacturing and public utilities.
Bremerton's downtown core is undergoing a comprehensive revitalization. A sense of optimism resonates among its residents and small business owners. The ferry terminal and Bremerton Transportation Center at the foot of downtown lead visitors into a growing arts community of galleries, theaters and shops. Restaurants, museums and cafes contribute to the eclectic ambiance. And there's much more to come. City officials and business leaders are bringing a new era to Bremerton with plans for mixed-use waterfront development and a new government center adjacent to the ferry terminal.
Bremerton's 36,000 people live among East and West Bremerton, divided by the waters of Port Washington Narrows and connected by the Manette and Warren Avenue bridges. Many distinct neighborhoods comprise the city, such as Manette, with its Bohemian appeal in East Bremerton; Charleston, a quaint section of the city filled with bungalows, and Rocky Point with its rows charming waterfront homes hugging the shoreline. Nearly unrivaled in the Puget Sound, Bremerton homes carry a median price half that of homes on the Seattle side of the water.
