The picturesque city of Cedar Hill is located approximately 19 miles southwest of downtown Dallas. Since the first settlers came to Cedar Hill in the 1840’s, the city has played an important role in the development of southwest Dallas County. In the days of the Chisholm Trail, Cedar Hill was a major stopping point between Corsicana and Fort Worth. The city also served as a commerce center for surrounding farmers, with direct rail access to Dallas and Houston. In 1856, Cedar Hill was a thriving small town, but disaster came in April of that year in the form of a tornado. Nine members of the community lost their lives and only two buildings were left standing. By 1860 the community was rebuilt and firmly established.
Cedar Hill is known as the 'City of Towers', due to a concentration of radio, television and other communication towers. Cedar Hill is approximately 800 feet above sea level and is the highest point between the Red River and Gulf Coast, making it a prime area for towers. The first tower began construction on May 2, 1955, and was completed by late October 1955 at the intersection of Beltline Road and Mansfield Road. The tower was the most unique of its kind. The tower stood 1,521 feet tall and was shared by both KRLD-TV and WFAA-TV.
Cedar Hill combines the old west past with the twenty-first century present. Take a moment and come out and experience all Cedar Hill has to offer: Joe Pool Lake, Cedar Hill State Park, scenic views and an array of shops and a unique history. Cedar Hill...where visitors are treated like neighbors, neighbors are treated like friends and friends are treated like family.
