Memphis tourist information
The City of Memphis welcomes you to our grand city. Memphis, Tennessee is recognized as the home of Elvis Presley and as the birthplace of the blues. Did you know that Elvis's home, Graceland, is the second most visited house in the country - behind the White House in Washington, D.C.? But Graceland is only one of the many exciting sites and attractions that you will want to see during your visit to Memphis.
Our Memphis in May Festival attracts people from around the world to compete in the International BBQ cooking contest. This festival draws thousands to the banks of the Mississippi for live concerts and the Sunset Symphony. We’re also home of the Peabody – queen of Southern hotels, Mud Island – the final resting place of the Memphis Belle and the National Civil Rights Museum, which is the only one of its kind in the world.
Memphis International Airport, off I-240 at Exit 23, is served by most major domestic and some foreign airlines, as well as a number of smaller commuter air carriers.
Memphis is a well-planned city and the streets are fairly easy to negotiate, except at peak business hours when things get downright hectic. Public transport is provided by the Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA), which operates throughout the city from 4:30 a.m. until 11:15 p.m. They also operate the Trolley 2 buses in the downtown area.
The famous Main Street Trolley lines run up and down Main Street from Auction Street in the North to J.O Patterson in the South. These antique trolleys also make a Riverfront Loop that gives a close-up view of the Mississippi River, the Pyramid and Mud Island. It also provides access to a variety of attractions including Downtown cafes, Beale Street and the National Civil Rights Museum. On the nights that special events are held, the Main Street Trolley runs until 1:00 am.
