Warrenton tourist information

Warrenton, the county seat of Warren County, was incorporated as a town on December 8, 1810. The city and the county are named for General Joseph Warren, a Revolutionary War hero who was killed in the Battle of Bunker Hill.

The Burkhalter Home, located in Warrenton, is said to be the first colonial home in Warrenton built around 1778. The Warren County courthouse, built in 1909 and the Confederate Monument are centerpieces of this city

Warrenton is located on Highway U.S. 278, which was for many years was used as the highway route from Atlanta to Augusta. U.S. 278, between Warrenton and Thompson, follows the path of the famous Upper Trading Path, an Indian Trail that led from Augusta to Indian settlements as far west as the Mississippi River.

A visit to Warrenton is a step back in time. Wonderful storefronts line the brick sidewalks along Main Street, and face a beautiful courthouse square. Historic houses have retained or renewed their grace and charm. Let's take a look around.

Warrenton has a rich revolutionary and antebellum history which is well preserved. Many homes, from cozy family cottages to magnificent mansions have been beautifully restored. Many others are in various stages of the restoration process, and a few are still available.

During the fourth year of the American Revolution, the town of Warrenton was established pursuant to an act of the North Carolina Provincial Congress. In 1979, a portion of the town was entered on the National Register as a Historic District.

On July 22, 1779, one hundred acres of land was purchased from Thomas Christmas for the town, and William Christmas soon drew the first plan of the town, with 162 half-acre lots. By the 1820's the town had become the center of a prosperous plantation region.

Warrenton became an educational center with the Warrenton Academy chartered in 1786, the Falkener School for young ladies by 1800, and the Mordecai School by 1809. Warrenton Academy later became John Graham High School, and the structure has recently undergone renovation and now houses county offices.

Unspoiled and generally uncrowded, Astoria and Warrenton nonetheless have several first-class interpretive attractions including Fort Clatsop, the Columbia River Maritime Museum, the Flavel House, Fort Stevens State Park, the Astoria Riverfront Trolley and the Astoria Column. The area has an extraordinary sense of place and feeling of history.
