The City of Seaside is a community with a diverse population of approximately 30,000 . The business community consists mainly of small family-owned businesses. Seaside is home to the Bed Races, and a variety of authentic ethnic restaurants. Motor City, the second largest auto center in the world, calls Seaside home as well as California State University at Monterey Bay.

The City of Sand City also has a growing population of working artists and artisans which create unique art objects for display indoors and outdoors. Sand Dollar Plaza and Edge Water Shopping Center comprise the only regional retail center on the Monterey Peninsula. They house Costco, Office Depot, Orchard Supply Hardware, Target, Borders Books and many other popular retail outlets along with smaller stores. Although over 4000 people come to work each day in Sand City, the population is 190 (January 1999). Sand City also boasts 1½ miles of pristine coast line which includes a scenic recreation trail.

Both cities overlook the Monterey Bay and are located approximately 125 miles south of San Francisco, 56 miles southwest of the Santa Clara Valley, and 345 miles north of Los Angeles, the elevation ranges from 4 to 400 feet above sea level.

Seaside, Sand City and the Monterey Peninsula are served by three general hospitals: Natividad Medical Center in Salinas (211-bed), Salinas Valley Memorial (230-bed) and Community Hospital of Monterey. (174-bed) Total700 attending physicians.

Seaside and Sand City enjoy the sunniest of the moderate year-round Peninsula coastal climates. Summer highs seldom exceed 80° F and winter temperatures rarely drop below 40° F. Annual rainfall averages 18.7 inches with over 95% occurring during the fall and winter months. The average relative humidity is 74% in summer and 66% in winter.
