We've also got an outstanding symphony, extraordinary art galleries and some opportunities you may not expect. So, come discover Pendleton...proud of its traditions and eager for the future.
Progress and the past go hand-in-hand in the historic town of Pendleton, South Carolina. Having already celebrated its 200th birthday, Pendleton continues its tradition of positive growth while retaining the charm and heritage which has made it a major tourist attraction as well as being a great place to live!
Founded in 1790 on land which just a few year earlier had been a part of the Cherokee Indian Nation, Pendleton now is one of the largest historic districts in the nation. A mixture of rugged Scotch-Irish immigrants and affluent South Carolina Lowcountry planters and politicians created the foundation on which Pendleton continues to grow. Now a modern-day community with fine homes, quaint shops, excellent restaurants and proud, friendly residents, the town is worth discovering - or rediscovering - as an excellent place to visit for awhile or stay for a lifetime. A picturesque village green is the centerpiece of Historic Pendleton. A tour center in the heart of town offers literature, tours and exhibits. The spotlight is not only on the majestic past, but on the opportunities for the present and the future. Business and industry flourishes, and a new Clemson University Research Park on the outskirts of town promises major attention in time to come. Clemson University itself is only minutes away.
An agricultural heritage, centered on one of the oldest farmers societies in the nation, along with a modern museum saluting the earlier days of farming, is prominent in town. Plantation life can be explored through two house museums.
Pendleton's tour center is located in the headquarters building of the Pendleton District Historical and Recreational Commission, an agency serving present-day Anderson, Oconee and Pickens counties. An 1850 general store building sitting high on a knoll in the center of the business district, the office houses the tour center, extensive local and genealogy research material, an exhibit area, arts, crafts and book center, as well as an administrative office.
Festivals in Pendleton are popular, too. The Spring Jubilee the first weekend in April, Old Farm Days in May, the July 4th Celebration and various Christmas events in December are enjoyed by thousands of people.
There's something for everyone in Pendleton - and we're always happy to see you!
