King City tourist information
King City is situated on Highway 101 in South Monterey County. The city's economic base is largely dependent upon agriculture with food processing and packing the primary sources of employment. Basic Vegetable Products, Gilroy Foods, Meyer Equipment, L.A. Hearne, San Bernarbe Vineyards and Gill Onions are major agricultural related employers. Mee Memorial Hospital and Casey Printing typify other sectors of the business community.
King City's economic outlook continues to be positive. The city is aggressively pursuing economic revitalization fueled by local expansion and small business growth. The city council and business community will work diligently with potential investors to facilitate appropriate development projects.
The City has adopted a formal economic strategy to guide its efforts. This strategy seeks to build upon the historic agricultural strengths of King City, and to diversify to include less seasonal employment and higher value-added products. An aggressive marketing program to identify and capitalize upon emerging opportunities is in progress.
East Ranch Business Park is a municipally owned industrial park encompassing nearly one hundred acres. The park is fully serviced and zoned for industrial and business uses. Prime sites ranging from one to fifteen acres are available. The Park's anchor is Basic Vegetable Products' 400,000 square foot warehouse and distribution center. Priced at $100,000 per acre, qualified development may obtain "free land'' for projects which benefit the community.
Coastal Tractor, Gonzales Irrigation and Temptec Engineering relocated near the west entrance to the Park in 1997. The King City Small Business Center (KCSBC) and Intelock also opened in the fall of 1997. These five businesses occupy five new buildings totaling over 45,000 square feet. Crinklaw Farms (50,000 s.f) recently opened the doors of its new office and warehouse. Heritage Cabinets (11 ,000 s.f.) commenced construction of its new location in August 1998.

Business counseling and affordable space with a wide range of support services are available from the KCSBC to tenants as well as area businesses. The KCSBC occupies 10,000 s.f. in the East Ranch Business Park and is supported by public and private sector funds.
A municipal Revolving Loan Fund is also available to assist with financing new business and development within the city. Ten loans, valued at over $652,000, have been approved to date. The projects are anticipated to create sixty new jobs, and retain five others.
Other community projects in progress include a multi-million dollar expansion of Mee Memorial Hospital, and the community Town Square redevelopment . Each proeject involves a non traditional sector of the local economy. Prospective tenants for the Town Square include a new Hartnell College campus, a three screen movie theater, restaurant, and various retail uses.
