Siler City tourist information
The Town of Siler City was chartered on March 7, 1887, and is the largest town in Chatham County. It is located within an hour's drive from the state capital, Raleigh. The climate is mild, with an average annual temperature of 57o F. Wintertime temperatures average 38o F, while summer averages around 72o F. Lawns are kept green by 47.26 inches of rainfall each year.
The Town of Siler City has a very promising future. One Town project currently underway is the expansion of the Town's lower reservoir which will double the Town's raw water reservoir capacity. The Town has also just completed the construction of a new Police Department building which is located at the rear of City Hall adjacent to the Siler City Fire Department.
The Town of Siler City has more than 7,000 citizens with a land area within the Corporate Limits of over 5 square miles. The Town's street department maintains 32 miles of streets, while the Town's water and sewer department maintains 100 miles of water and sewer lines. In the year 2000, the Town collected 2,656 tons of trash along with 216 tons of recyclables. The Town's tax rate is $0.043 per $100.00 of assessed value. A house valued at $100,000 would pay $430.00 in property tax.
The highway system in and around Siler City is improved with the completion of the US 421 Bypass and widening of US 64. With four lane highways running both North-South and East-West, Siler City is at a crossroads where continued growth and economic development are ever present.
