Salisbury tourist information
Salisbury Maryland
The area’s heritage of farming and fishing has continued since the 1660’s. The early settlers cultivated the land, worked the waters, built the communities and passed on to their children a way of life where work is intertwined with the pleasures of the seashore, fishing, boating and wildlife.
The City of Salisbury, at the headwaters of the Wicomico River, was chartered in 1732. As its potential as a port and regional distribution center was recognized, schools, churches and cultural institutions were established. Salisbury quickly became the dominant city on the Peninsula as it became the focal point for transportation.
Today Wicomico County holds onto its rural roots while embracing the future. The area is a center of high technology industry, top quality medical care, and world class institutions of higher learning. Salisbury is still the focal point for regional transportation with Highway 50 and 13, the second largest river port in Maryland, and the second largest airport by passenger volume in the state.
Salisbury North Carolina
Salisbury - (Incorporated 1755; Population 27,800) - Today the home of ten historic districts, Salisbury is a city that thrives on its past. Chartered in 1755 as the county seat, Salisbury was not only the major center of trade and politics but also the largest city in western North Carolina. Throughout the 18th and early 19th centuries, Salisbury remained the largest city and also an important jumping point for pioneers heading west. When the railroad arrived in 1859, the town continued to grow and prosper. Many historic sites remain to this day and visitors are encouraged to take the Heritage Tour, a walking tour through town, highlighting various types of historic architecture. For a city originally named after a cathedral town in England, Salisbury remains a unique and special place today.
