Mooresville tourist information

Mooresville is charming little town about 20 miles southwest of Huntsville just off Highway 565 in Limestone County. Visiting Mooresville is like stepping back in time to a peaceful, less hectic way of living. In fact, Mooresville, with its tree-shaded streets, white picket fences and absence of sidewalks, is the model for many of the new "planned communities" gong up everywhere as people search for that neighborhood feeling. Architects and developers from around the country come to Alabama Territory's first incorporated town to see how it works. Mooresville is often referred to as "Alabama's Williamsburg" and its rural appearance makes it look like a pre-Civil War setting.

Mooresville's history began in 1805 when the first settlers came to land occupied by the Chickasaw Indians. By 1818, Mooresville had 62 residents and petitioned the Alabama Territorial Legislature for an Act of Incorporation. Alabama didn't become a state until a year later in 1819, making Mooresville a "town older than the state."

For some, our historic downtown is the draw. Like a scene stolen from yesteryear America, quaint shops line Main and Broad streets, inviting you in through brick-and-stone facades reminiscent of horse-and-buggy days. Their plank floors, though polished and clean, bear the scars of the countless heels that have clacked across them for decades.

The railroad track that brought life to this then-remote region of the Piedmont in 1873 still bisects the heart of downtown. And in that heart, the community values that took root as the fledgling town flourished alongside a booming cotton trade continue to beat strongly today.

Our downtown has evolved over the years, adding amenities like the centerpiece Mooresville Citizen Center, eclectic boutiques and fine restaurants, but our commitment to serve endures.

For others, Mooresville meets a need for speed. Take exit 36 off I-77 and drive directly to the hub of Race City USA – Lakeside Business Park, the location for many of the more than 60 racing teams that gave into the urge to put down roots in this town that just feels like home. Between races, cars from NASCAR, Busch Grand National, the Craftsman Truck Series and ARCA all head back to Mooresville for maintenance, improvements and testing.

In the park, you can practically walk shop to shop and visit the home base of such greats as Rusty Wallace, Sterling Marlin and Ricky Rudd.

Hop back in your car for a short trek to Dale Earnhardt Incorporated empire on Coddle Creek Road. Visitors are welcome at most shops, where you can view the cars as they’re repaired and primed for action, see team memorabilia or shop for souvenirs.

Sparkling like an aquamarine jewel under North Carolina’s brilliant blue skies, Lake Norman in the winter attracts sportsmen from all over. North Carolina’s largest lake has a spot for you. A quiet cove where the sounds of nature are broken only by an occasional whir of a cast fishing line. A wide open channel where skimming the water’s surface feels almost like flying.

Here, fishing boats, sail boats and river boats are equally at home. Yes. We said river boats. Enjoy a unique dining experience with a dinner cruise on the Catawba Queen or Catawba Belle.

Whether you pull into town to explore our shops on Main Street, to possibly bump into your favorite driver, or to land a trophy bass, plan on staying a spell and enjoying a sample of all we have to offer.
