Henderson is located in Adams County and is part of the Denver, Colorado metro area.
Founded in 1797 on the Ohio river, world-wide shipping resulted in Henderson becoming the richest per capita town in the U.S. This led to the construction of numerous 19th century houses and buildings that are still in use.
John James Audubon lived and worked in Henderson, from 1810 to 1819. The John James Audubon State Park and Museum houses his work and downtown features life-sized sculptures by Raymond Graf taken based on Audubon paintings.
Henderson is located in Vance County (of which it is the county seat) between Raleigh and Norlina along US Hwy 1 near Oxford, Manson, and Kerr Lake State Recreation Area. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 14,934, a decrease of 721 since 1990.
Named the fastest growing large city in America by the U.S. Census, the City of Henderson is recognized as the gateway community into the Las Vegas region. Separated by mountains and desert from Boulder City and the Lake Mead Recreation Area, it forms the southern edge for the fastest growing metropolitan area in the United States. The City's population of 207,640 (April, 2002) ranks Henderson as the second largest city in the State of Nevada. Henderson overtook Reno in December, 1999 to become the second largest city in Nevada.
Located just 7 miles from the famous Las Vegas Strip and a mile from beautiful Lake Mead, Henderson is known throughout the nation for its premiere master planned residential communities, outstanding parks and recreation facilities, cultural activities and a rapidly growing business community. Henderson has claimed a number of national titles in the past years.
