Fayetteville is located in the heart of Mid-America. At the foothills of the Ozark Mountains, Fayetteville is 35 miles from the Arkansas-Missouri border and 25 miles from the Arkansas-Oklahoma border. The city is part of the Fayetteville-Springdale-Rogers MSA (Metropolitan Statistical Area) comprised of Washington and Benton counties.
The City of Fayetteville was incorporated and made county seat of Fayette County on December 20, 1823. It was named in honor of the Marquis de Lafayette of France who fought against England in the American Revolution. The city's courthouse, built in 1825, is the oldest in Georgia and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Fayetteville is a city that hosts many annual events, including the Old Courthouse Art Show in May, the Main Street Festival in October, and Christmas in Fayetteville in December.
Fayetteville's newspaper, The Fayette County News, has been in operation since 1886.

The City of Fayetteville has a population of 7,000 people and is located within a short driving distance of two metropolitan areas, Huntsville, Alabama approximately 25 miles and Nashville approximately 84 miles. Although the city is small in size, our residents have access to the amenities of the larger population of the metropolitan areas and still retain the small town atmosphere. Our city school system has ranked in the top three systems of the state for the past 10 years.
