Charlotte is located conveniently off I-69, just southwest of Michigan's capital city of Lansing. The city was established in 1833 and became the County Seat. Once called Eaton Center, the city was renamed after early settler E.B. Bostwick's wife. The original 1845 courthouse still stands along with the Courthouse Square consisting of the 1885 Eaton County Courthouse and 1873 Sheriff's Residence. Charlotte is also home to the 1976 Courthouse making Charlotte and Eaton County unique with three existing courthouses.

Charlotte offers small town charm through its historic sites, festivals, parks, dining and unique shopping opportunities as well as modern convenience in its hotels, retail stores and mid-Michigan location.

It was quite a week. On one day, the non-profit group Partners for Livable Communities rated Charlotte among four cities it called "America's Most Livable." On another, the National Public Radio show "Talk of the Nation" saluted Charlotte with a live broadcast from this city. A listener in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, liked what she heard to much she called the show to ask what jobs were available here. One of the show's panelists, a Virginia real estate developer, said, "This town, if it were a rocket, it would have launched its first stage. It's glowing in the sky and the world sees it".
