The Maxwell Wildlife Refuge, six miles north of Canton is comprised of rolling hills, creeks, springs, and beautiful prairie grasses and wildflowers. 200 head of bison and 50 elk roam free on 2,800 acres close to the Santa Fe and Chisholm Trail.

Elk can be seen only in winter, approximately December through March. Bison will also be sporting their winter coats at this time of year. Maxwell definitely offers beautiful views of the prairie and its inhabitants each season of the year. The renewal comes in spring with migrations of birds, grasses and wildflowers springing forth, and baby buffalo being born. Summer brings warm weather for picnics and fishing. Fall brings the changing colors of the trees to gold, the sumac to red, and the grasses to beige and rust. Winter, the prairie lies dormant sometimes covered with snow or ice. The elk are sporting their full grown antlers and are seen out in the open for winter tours. Tours consist of traveling along a prairie trail with a guide relating history of the area, identifying grasses, trees, and wildflowers.

FIRST MONDAY TRADE DAYS is probably the best known event in Canton, Texas. World Famous First Monday Trade Days dates back before any of our senior citizens can remember. Records exist back to the mid-1800's. Most likely this event is years older than written records show. The First Monday Trade Days developed around the circuit court held on the first Monday of each month. In the pioneer days of East Texas, this was a time to lay aside the work and go to the county seat to hear court, buy needed supplies, and, of course, sell produce and farm animals.

Through the years, this practice evolved into the multi-acre grounds with over 7,000 booths offering antique furniture, depression glass, quilts, collectibles, and much, much more. First Monday Trade Days begins on Thursday before the first Monday of each month. Open from 8:00 a.m. "til dark", the shopper has ample time to scout for that just right item. The air of a "country fair" greets the crowds of over 250,000 each month. Weather, good or bad, has never cancelled First Monday Trade Days.
