Archdale tourist information
Archdale was settled as Bush Hill in 1786 by Quakers who migrated from Bush River, South Carolina. The town was renamed Archdale in 1887 in honor of John Archdale , the first Quaker governor of North Carolina. The town prospered because of the presence of a major tannery, which provided leather for the manufacture of shoes, saddles and other goods which were made in Archdale. The plank road from Fayetteville to Salem ran through Archdale in the 1850's, providing its earliest residents with a firsthand knowledge of the importance of being along a major trade route.
Construction in 1892 of a train track running near Archdale added another means for goods to move through the town. The city incorporated for the first time in 1869, but let the charter lapse in 1924 so that the county government would take over the responsibility of maintaining the roads. Archdale incorporated again in 1969.
The real boom for Archdale started in 1984, shortly after the completion of the new Interstate 85. The easy access to the interstate highway promoted commuter growth and an influx of industries. Many of the industries are related to furniture production either as actual manufacturers or suppliers.
