Raton was settled with its present name in 1880 by the Santa Fe Railroad. In December 1878 the first locomotive had entered New Mexico through Raton Pass. Bolstered by railroad commerce and nearby coal fields, Raton called itself “the Pittsburgh of the West.” Raton’s
