The history of Grants is the stuff Wild West legends are made of. Three brothers, Angus, Lewis, and John Grant were contracted to build the railroad through this vast area. Base camps were established during the work westward. First, the area became known as Grant's Camp, then Grant's Station, and eventually just Grants.
In the late 1800s, homesteaders and settlers were mostly cattle and sheep ranchers. Grazing pastures and water were abundant. Logging camps started in the nearby Zuni Mountains. The discovery of Uranium began the third economic and population rush.
Although the town of Grants was founded in the late 1870s, people had been making this area their home since the 12th century. Native Americans established pueblos and small villages throughout western New Mexico. Today, you can relive the ancient past at Chaco Canyon National Historical Park, Acoma Pueblo - Sky City, and El Morro National Monument and other sites in the area.
Today modern highways meet ancient crossroads. Grants is a happy community that continues to grow as a destination. From fishing and boating at Bluewater Lake and Ramah Lake to championship golf and hiking through a host of National Monuments, Grants is multifaceted and multicultural vacation destination.
