Bernalillo tourist information
Bernalillo holds a significant place in the history of New Mexico. When Coronado first explored northern New Mexico in 1540 he wintered across the river from the town. Don Diego de Vargas founded it in 1695. Located at the northern end of the Sandia Mountains and near the confluence of the Jemez River and the Rio Grande, it was a natural commercial center. The Bernalillo Mercantile Company, founded in 1871 on Bernalillo’s main street established this reputation. The town’s importance to Hispanic history continues to be celebrated year-round and preserved in a National Historic District.
