Ringgold tourist information

Ringgold became the county seat of Catoosa County on March 16, 1854, seven years after the city was incorporated. The city is named in honor of Major Samuel Ringgold, who died fighting bravely for his country in the Mexican War.

The Ringgold Depot, built in 1850, is one of the few antebellum railroad depots in Georgia. The depot, once used in the Civil War as a supply point for Confederate troops, is being used today as the Ringgold Opry, featuring bluegrass music.

The Old Stone Museum Church, built around 1849, is where the famous gospel hymn "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms" was first performed. Used at one time as a Civil War hospital, the church has since been restored and houses a Civil War Museum.

According to 2000 Census, the City of Ringgold had a population of 2,422 persons. Between 1990 and 2000, the city experienced a population increase of 44.6%, compared to the state growth during this period of 26.4%.
