Garden city Georgia is incorporated since 1939 and has 11289 inhabitants. Garden City is in the Chatham County in Georgia.
Many traveled the Santa Fe Trail through the "Great American Desert" on their way west and southwest. After the railroad was completed in the late 1870s many of the communities in southwest Kansas were started. One of those communities that has prospered throughout the years was Garden City. It is a culturally diverse community that allows visitors the opportunity for unique experiences in shopping, nature, history, or conducting business.
Stand on the prairie and picture yourself in the midst of a herd of bison. The 3, 670 acre Finney Game Refuge is home to native sand sage prairie grasses and the oldest publicly owned bison herd in Kansas. Other wildlife inhabiting the area includes lesser prairie chickens, ground squirrels, quail, jackrabbits and deer.
Go on safari or take a walk through the jungle at Lee Richardson Zoo, the 3rd largest tourist attraction in Kansas, featuring over 350 animals in its beautifully landscaped grounds. The zoo is found in Finnup Park, along with the "Big Pool," filled with 2.8 million gallons of water and the Finnup Center for Conservation Education and the Finney County Historical Society Museum.
Absorb a little more history and get off the beaten path with our historic walking and driving tours, or step inside the historic 1887 Windsor Hotel. This four-story hotel, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was sometimes referred to as the "Waldorf of the Prairies" and seen as the finest hotel between Kansas City and Denver.
If you’re looking for awesome golf, Buffalo Dunes is listed in the top 10 in Kansas and in the top 100 in the nation. Or, play against the south wind, a course laid out in the rolling sandhills at Southwind Country Club.
Annual events abound including dinner theatres, arts and crafts shows, antique malls and collector’s shows.
