Vero Beach tourist information
The unspoiled natural beauty of Vero Beach may be the first thing you notice on your visit here. This quaint seaside city is surrounded by miles of lush, unspoiled public beaches. But this is only the beginning of what you will find here. Stroll down Ocean or Cardinal Drives and visit the variety of stores in the lushly landscaped Village Shops. The Riverside Park area offers the Center for the Arts. Here the exhibitions are continuously changing. Their gallery is dedicated to the works of Florida artists. Lectures, concerts and films top off the cultural calendar.
Some of the treasure of Vero beach is literally gold and silver. In the 16th and 17th centuries Spanish treasure ships sank off Vero's shore. The McLarty Museum, listed in the National Register of Historic Places, provides a "wealth" of information on local treasure. Assorted gold and silver coins salvaged from an ill-fated Spanish fleet sunk in a 1715 hurricane are the centerpiece of this exhibit. Needless to say, scuba diving is a popular activity here, whether searching for bullion or exploring the near shore reefs for lobster.
Another local attraction is the Driftwood Inn. Built completely from driftwood and timber, visitors would swear that pulling out the wrong branch would bring the whole building down. But the eccentric architecture decorated with cannons from Spanish ships, hand painted ceramic tiles, ornate church windows and a wide assortment of bells has withstood waves and hurricanes since the 1930's.
