Pensacola tourist information
Where the "New South" meets "Old Florida," this historic and picturesque city offers lush natural beauty combined with the vibrancy of a burgeoning urban area. Known as the "City of Five Flags," Pensacola has been under the rule of the Spanish, the British, the French, the Confederacy and the United States since the first conquistadors landed in 1559. Reminders of this extensive and varied heritage can be seen in a stroll through the Historic District.
Designated a National Historic Landmark, this area is lined with restored homes, museums, shops, galleries and restaurants; some more than two hundred years old. To the west of Pensacola is the Naval Air Station, which boasts the world-renowned National Museum of Naval Aviation and hosts the Blue Angels Homecoming Show each November. Also in this area is the 16th-century Spanish Fort San Carlos de Barrancas and the Old Pensacola Lighthouse.
Boasting some of the most pristine white sands in the state, thousands of visitors flock to both Pensacola Beach and Perdido Key. The beaches here are known for their easygoing demeanor and sun-bleached shores. But don't get too relaxed, because nightlife in this area is second to none. Perdido Key and Pensacola Beach are also home to luxurious resorts, condominiums, charming cottages, delectable restaurants and quaint shops. Pensacola Village offers visitors a glimpse of Spanish history and culture in the colonial homes, boutiques, restaurants and archaeological museums that are situated along scenic waterfront streets.
The nearby Gulf Islands National Seashore, stretching from Mississippi to Florida, is a paradise for beach lovers. Windswept dunes are dotted with sea oats, and the aquamarine waters of the Gulf line a white ribbon of sand that unfurls for miles. A protected environment for more than 280 species of birds, nature lovers will delight in these unspoiled stretches of shoreline. The more active vacationer will enjoy fishing, boating, camping and ranger-guided tours. Pensacola is also becoming recognized as a hub for ecotourism. Nearby Milton, dubbed the Canoe Capital of Florida, offers opportunities for canoeing, kayaking and tubing along its crystal-clear spring-fed waters.
Pensacola is a place where Southern hospitality and style are mixed with a beachfront lifestyle. Whether it's the mix of Southern cooking and fresh seafood or historic homes and dazzling nightlife, you'll find yourself enjoying every minute of it. After all, what else would you expect from a city named the seventh most polite city in the nation? So kick back… and enjoy.
