Ft Pierce tourist information
Fort Pierce has been a place of strategic importance for over a century and a half. Fort Pierce's history began when U.S. Army Lt. Col. Benjamin Kendrick Pierce established a fort used as a military headquarters during the Seminole Indian War. The fort was important because it was accessible to the ocean via the Indian River Inlet, a natural waterway located just north of Jack Island.
After the Seminole War moved into the Everglades in 1842, Fort Pierce began developing as a permanent settlement. Water transportation and fishing were the big industries early on, but eventually gave way to citrus. Today, Fort Pierce has a robust economy and a rapidly expanding business sector located alongside bountiful recreational areas and beaches.
The Fort Pierce Inlet State Recreation Area is located directly on the white sand beaches. Sand dunes are anchored down by grasses, sea oats, and vines and are situated in front of a hardwood seaside forest. Boardwalks and a 20 minute self-guided tour that lead through a hammock of wind pruned live oaks, cabbage palms, sea grapes and strangler figs. The abundance of shrimp, fish and crabs make this area perfect for sport fishing or quenching an ecological thirst for knowledge.
Fort Pierce has the charm and appeal of a scenic small town with the energy and spirit of a burgeoning coastal city.
