Crystal River tourist information
If snorkeling and water activities interest you, Crystal River is an ideal vacation destination. About two hours north of Clearwater Beach, and minutes from Inverness and Lecanto, lie waterways teeming with exotic wildlife. It is not uncommon for manatees, attracted by the 72 degree winter water, to nudge and caress adventurous swimmers. These gentle giants average 10 feet long and 1,200 pounds. Numerous dive centers and resorts in the city of Crystal River offer complete dive packages and opportunities for people of all ages and experience.
About 20 minutes south of Crystal River is the Homosassa State Wildlife Park, where visitors can see deer, bears, bobcats, egrets and flamingos along unspoiled nature trails. The Crystal River State Archaeological Site, started by the Indians of the Deptford culture, is considered one of the longest, continually occupied sites in Florida. For 1600 years, (200 BC - AD 1400) the 14-acre site was one of the most imposing prehistoric ceremonial centers on Florida's west coast. Crystal River is also famous for its flats fishing where redfish, sea trout, tarpon and mackerel are abundant. Grouper are great favorites in the deeper waters. Local fishing guides can outfit individuals or groups. The nearby islands of Kings Bay are perfect for diving as well, but are mostly accessible by boat only.
February also brings the Florida Manatee Festival, with seafood, a golf tournament, art show, concerts and manatee displays. Crystal River is a water-lover’s paradise, with enough activities and expeditions to make a perfectly relaxing and gratifying vacation.
