Zatec Tourist Information
This significant royal town was founded on a rocky point above the Ohre River on a site a former old Slavonic settlement in the middle of the 13th century. The Gothic town, where the ideas of Hussites were supported later, was built in the 14th century. It preserved its Gothic appearance until the thirty years' war. The war evoked restorations in the baroque and later in the classic style, which made the features of the present square. Also the Gothic-Renaissance town hall with a massive tower, which dominates the town, along with most of the citizen houses, which were built on strait sites, were modified in above mentioned styles. The original Gothic castle was re-built as a town brewery. Advantageous climate conditions in this region are favourable for hop cultivation, which has a 700 years old tradition here. This product has become the symbol of the town. The Zatecky Hop Festival, which is known as "Docesna", is held regularly in its honour.
