Voronezh Tourist Information
Voronezh was first mentioned in 12th century chronicles, but was officially founded in 1585 as a fortress against the invading Tatars.
Cossack villages or 'stanitsa' were established in this frontier region that has seen a number of uprisings. Some of the most legendary uprisings were led by Stenka Razin in 1670-1671 and Kondraty Bulavin in 1707-1708.
Voronezh went into Russian history due to Peter I, who built there the first Russian shipyard in 1695-96 and then made the Azov fleet there. During the reign of Peter the Great, the first Russian Warship was built here in 1696. And then more than 200 warships from Voronezh dockyards followed to make up the new Russian fleet.
During the civil war Voronezh was an outpost of struggle with Denikin forces and during Great Patriotic War it was the place of great battles with German invaders. Today Voronezh is an important administrative and cultural center of the Black-Earth Area.
The city of Voronezh has been famous with talented people since very old times. Among them there are literary men, musicians, actors, painters, graphic artists, sculptors, craftsmen and art photographers.
It was the birthplace of two peasant poets, who wrote some of the finest examples of Russian poetry — A. V. Koltsov (1809-1842) and I. S. Nikitin (1824-1861). There are several literary museums in Voronezh, including Nikitin House-Museum and monument to Koltsov.
