Villa De Leyva Tourist Information

Founded in 1572 by Andrés Díaz Venero de Leyva, Villa de Leyva 177 kilometers from Bogotá, is one of the most beautiful colonial towns in the country. The streets and the main plaza are of stone which gives the village a historical and colonial environment which takes the visitor into the past. Among the historical and cultural attractions are the houses of the forefathers such as, Antonio Nariño and Antonio Ricaurte, the Main Church, the Monasterio and the Convento de Carmen. Worth visiting in the surrounding area are the Monasterio de Santo Ecce Homo, the Convento and the Desierto de La Candelaria, rich in fossils of an old sea, and the small village of Ráquira, one of the most important centers of handicrafts and pottery in the country. Also you have the opportunity to attend internationally recognized events such as the Festival de Cometas (Kite Festival), the Festival de Luces ( Festival of Lights ) in December and the Festival de Festivales in September.
