Valga Tourist Information

Valga is one of those towns that refuses to live in one country. It is the big sister to Valka in Latvia. Konnaoja ("frog cr") separates Valga and Valka. The town itself was first chronicled in 1286, and grew up beside the Riga - Tartu and Riga - Pskov routes. Nowadays it is a large, mildly industrialised country town. Places of Interest: Valga is an architectural mishmash. It's as if all the forms of architecture used in Estonia over the last century or so were shuffled in a bag and placed at random on a town plan. St. John's church with its clock-tower, was built in the late baroque style and is the only oval church in the country. A monument commemorating the 400th anniversary of the town was built in 1984. East of Vabaduse street you'll find an interesting district of wooden houses and blocks of flats. The railway station in Jaama street was built by Germans in 1949.
