Valdivia Tourist Information
The city of Valdivia, generally considered one of the most beautiful in Chile, is located at the confluence of the Rivers CalleCalle and Cruces. Surrounded by channels and islands with abundant flora and fauna, it has beautiful architecture which reflects the German influence, and a huge number of sites of historical, touristic, and ecological interest. Valdivia is without a doubt one of the most beautiful cities in Chile. It was founded in 1552 by Pedro de Valdivia, and large fortifications, many of which survive today, were built nearby to defend it.
A good place to start a tour of the city is with the CalleCalle bridge, then walk along the Avenida Picarte for an admiring look at the old Torreon del Barro, the city's true emblem. A stroll along the Avenida Arturo Prat is especially interesting, since you will see the beautiful mansions (typical of German - style architecture at the beginning of the century) along the bank of the river. The Wharf and the River Market are the point of arrival for boats carrying fish and seafood, and sometimes farm products. Continue on to the opposite side by way of the Calle Yungay, to see the Torreon de los Canelos, which is the other end of the wall.
Cross the Pedro de Valdivia Bridge, and you are on Isla Teja, an enlargement of the city. Visit the Historical and Anthropological Museum, with its interesting collection of objects throwing light on the life of the German settlers of the area, along with Mapuche pieces such as silverwork, tools, fabrics, pottery, and wooden articles. To one side of the Museum is the old Anwandter Brewery; the Park and the Prochelle House; the Southern University with its Botanical Garden holding a wide sample of the native flora; and Saval Park, so suitable for picnicking, with its beautiful plants.
From the river harbor, cruise ships are constantly weighing anchor for the mouth of the River Valdivia on attractive outings to enjoy the scenery and to see the Spanish forts of Corral, Niebla, Amargos and Mancera, all of them in an excellent state of preservation.
