Vac Tourist Information
The country’s first railway “dashed” at 30 km/h from Pest to Vác in 1846. Hungary’s only triumphal arch was built here: the Stone Gate was built for Empress Maria Theresia’s visit in 1764. These are just two of the interesting events to have occurred in the town on the Danube that has been the Bishop’s Seat for 1000 years.
Konstantin Square is dominated by the impressive, classicist Bishop’s Cathedral. The 18th century Bishop’s Palace (Migazzi Square 1) and the ciborium of the Piarist Church and Monastery (Trinity Square) are worthy of interest.
One of the country’s biggest baroque squares is Március 15 square; all of the houses there are monuments. The Whites’ Church was named after the Dominican monks, who wear white frocks (24). The altar of the church is a richly-ornamented rococo masterpiece. In the crypt we can see the exhibition - “Memento Mori” - that is considered a curiosity in Europe. It displays burial memorials from the 16th to the 18th century.
The Greek Church Exhibition Hall was originally built as a church but has a place for art exhibitions today (Március 15 Square 19). The memorials of the town’s thousand-year-long heroic history can be seen in the Hincz Gyula Collection (Káptalan Street 16) and in the Mediaeval Cellar (Széchenyi Street 3).
Hétkápolna (Seven Chapels - Derecske dűlő 2) is a shrine. The Honvéd (Home-Defender) Monument evokes the heroism of the freedom fight of 1848. The bridge over the Gombás Brook is the only baroque stone bridge decorated with sculpture. It is pleasant to walk on the tree-lined promenade by the side of the Danube.
