Ulyanovsk Tourist Information

Ulyanovsk, one of oldest cities in the Volga region, picturesquely lies on banks of the Great Russian River Volga.

Ulyanovsk is a city of unique landscapes: hilly coast of Volga, beautiful views and fresh air. Nature itself creates magnificent conditions for rest at any time of year. Yachting, fishing, cooking fish soup and appetizing barbecue is what makes the region so attractive for tourists.

Founded as Simbirsk in the 17th century, Ulyanovsk is a famous tourist stop as the birthplace and boyhood home of Lenin (born Vladimir Ilich Ulyanov) and thus a former Soviet leader. If you are interested in Russian history and everything connected with the Socialist Revolution, Ulyanovsk’s museums will provide you with all the necessary information.

Besides, the city is proud not only of its historical past, but also of ancient traditions and customs of the peoples inhabiting the area (Mordovian, Chuvash, etc.).

The main memorial zone occupies the high Volga banks up to the giant Lenin Memorial Centre. The Lenin Memorial quickly emerged as the architectural symbol of the city of Ulyanovsk.

The Venets embankment (venets means “crown” in Russian) was named so because its high bank has the form of the crown. The embankment houses the Memorial, the monument to Karamzin, the Museum of Local Studies and Arts, and the Venets Hotel.

You may visit the Goncharov's house. The museum is in the actual two-storey house of Goncharov’s childhood, with a large collection of furniture and memorabilia from the famous Russian author’s life.

The Monument to Nicolai Karamzin (1766-1826), the Russian historian who wrote the multi-volume History of the Russian State, is located on the Venets embankment. It was created under the direction of the famous sculptor P.K.Klodt. The monument is represented in the image of the Muse Clio that symbolizes Karamzin’s contribution to the historical scholarship of the world.

The cable railway down to the Volga bank and back offers a fascinating view on the city and the river.
