Tunja Tourist Information
157 kilometers from Bogotá is Tunja, capital of the state of Boyaca. Founded in 1539, the city's Colonial construction reflects its Spanish culture. During the XVI and XVII centuries Tunja became the residence of large landowners and the center of mansions, churches and convents built with luxury and refinement. Some of these Colonial treasures are: the Casa del Fundador in the Plaza de Bolivar and the Casa de Juan de Vargas who had a set of murals in Spanish Renaissance. Among the religious art are various Baroque churches and convents. Outstanding is the Capilla del Rosario in the Iglesia de Santo Domingo, the Cathedral, the Convent of Santa Clara, and the Convent of San Agustín.
