Travnik Tourist Information

Travnik, the former residence of the rulers of Bosnia, is now the administrative political center of Central Bosnia. Travnik is situated in the narrow valley of the Lasva River which is bordered by Vlasic mountain to the north and Mt. Vilenica to the south. Wherever you may wander here you will find traces of rich culture and eventful history. Like other central Bosnia towns, Travnik has well preserved its medieval character. The ancient castle is of particular interest with its still intact city walls and piercing fortresses used to defend the city from outside invaders.

Travnik was once the 'European Istanbul'. It boasted many Ottoman mosques and Islamic schools, and was a main trading post between Dubrovnik to Belgrade. Many beautiful rivers and river sources run through Travnik... the old town is especially blessed with cascades, brooks and fountains. Walking through her streets you'll find the birthplace of Ivo Andric, a Yugoslav Nobel Prize for Literature winner for his famous novel 'Bridge over the Drina which is translated into many European languages. His home is now a museum of local heritage and natural history ... not to mention the great meal you can have in his garden! We hope to see you here soon! Greetings from the people of Travnik!!
