Tirana tourist information
Tirana became a city in 1614, when a mosque, a public bath and some shops were built, the most common "buildings of a city. Tiran began to be developped in the XII th century, and later on, in 1789, the mosque of Et'hem Bey was built (in the photo below) . The Tower of the Clock was built in the meantime, about 35 m high.
In February, the 2nd Tirana became the capital of Albania, declared so by the Congress of Lushnja. Tirana had about 17.000 inhabitants in this period ; today there are about 750.000 inhabitants.
From 1920 to today Tirana has changed immensely. The Main boulevard called "The Nation's Heroes" blv. was built, and then during the Italian occupation some Governmental builgins were built around the boulevard. Later on, after the Second World War Russian architecture reined in the upcoming Albanian buildings.
In our days, Tirana is the centre of Albanian culture, sports, economical, and political activities. The city is spreading immensely, and the population grows day by day. The biggest exodus (internal) was that of the 90's when the population was triplicated.
