Try and watch such a trawler from the bottom when it’s on land. It’s huge. And here they stand when they need to be repaired – on the harbour of Tejn. In the harbour you do not find as many fishing vessels as earlier. But do you find that other places? Once, fishing was a regular industry in Tejn and this you can see from the harbour, which is very big – and also the best one under all weather conditions. If you just drive through the town, you will be surprised - the town is also bigger than you expect! Many new houses originate from the last days of prime of the fishery during the 60ties and 70ties. Tejn is the third largest harbour of Bornholm – after Nexø and Rønne. And the local restaurant is called “The Inn of the Skipper” (Skipperkroen).
In town, along a small road, which of course is called ”Møllegade”, you find the post mill of Tejn. It was built around 1800 in Årsballe, but 50 years later it was taken down and moved to Tejn as the owner thought that there was more wind here. The post mill worked until 1941, where a local organization took over the mill. Volunteers have taken care of the mill and therefore, it is very well preserved. The mill is not working anymore though, and there is no admittance.
Thanks to the inhabitants of Tejn, the Church was built in 1939 as people did not want to toil all the way to Ols Church in order to hear the Word of God. In Tejn, you find many chapels belonging to different independent congregations.
North of Tejn harbour, the town becomes Sandkås, and here quite a number of houses are replaced by hotels and pensions, which are situated side by side. Many exiting, old summer cottages are also located here in the cliff ground along the coast.
When the road turns a bit uphill from the coast you find a small road to the lovely Sandkås Beach, which is the only good sandy beach on this long northern stretch of the east coast of Bornholm. Here, you can also find the varied rocky coast path, which goes from Sandkås to Allinge.
Right north of Sandkås Beach, in the peaceful area between the road and the coast, you find the camping site.
