Tampere tourist information

Tampere Finland

Tampere is the largest inland city of the Nordic countries with a population of over 200 000. Tampere was founded in 1779 on the banks of the Tammerkoski Rapids (one of Finland´s official national scenic areas) and it evolved into the most highly industrialized locality in Finland during the 19th century. Thanks to the new city planning, the former industrial areas such as Finlayson and Tampella are alive again: restaurants, shops, sport and fitness centres, Museum Centre Vapriikki and the Central Museum of Labour have found locations there.

Tampere is also a city of education and research on both national and international scale. There are two universities and numerous other institutions of education. Tampere is an important centre of Southern Finland when it comes to employment and education. It is also an outstanding centre for Finnish cultural life with its theatres and events focusing on music, literature, arts and architecture.

The Central Square of Tampere is the heart of the city. This is where people meet - and all the local bus lines intersect. The square is also the stage of many festivities, for example New Year, the First of May and Tampere Day.

The Central Square is surrounded by many beautiful buildings, a few of them built in the Finnish Art Nouveau style. The oldest buiding however is the Old Church, built in 1824.

One of the most important buildings in the Central Square is the Old City Hall, completed in 1890. Today it is used for civic reseptions. The annual Declaration of Peace for Christmas is read aloud from its balcony.

Pyynikki Ridge, an impressive reminder of the glacial period, rises between the lakes Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi. The fresh pine forest of Pyynikki Park, a peaceful oasis in the middle of the town, is an ideal spot to take a break.

On top of the ridge, among the pine forest, spectacular views expand from the red-brick observation tower. The tower café offers delicious home-made doughnuts.

At the foot of the ridge, by Lake Pyhäjärvi, there are the Pyynikki Summer Theatre, a beach and Scandic Hotel Rosendahl.
