Stellanello Tourist Information

The five-pointed star on the coat-of-arms gives its name to the rural town in the upper Merula Valley, which is situated 900 metres above sea level. It also tells something of the history of this small municipality which, after passing under the dominion of the Del Carretto, Clavesana and Doria families, obtained its own statutes in 1305. It was governed by five consuls, each representing the territory of one of the five different parishes. Stellanello was the birthplace of Marco Ambrogio Divizia, the commander of Andrea Doria's galleys. The remains of the castle belonging to the Clavesana family are situated in the district of San Gregorio, where you can also see the oldest church in the area, dating from the fifteenth century. The parish church of San Vincenzo was built in the seventeenth century. The main municipal district is Rossi. You can visit Palazzo Laureri in the district of Bossaneri. The territory is dominated by the peaks of Pizzo d'Evigno (989 m.) and Monte Ceresa (913 m.). The fields in the upper part of the Merula Valley are a favourite area for hang-gliding and flying light aircraft. There are also some excellent spots for mountain-bike and horse-riding enthusiasts, especially near the Ginestro Pass (677 m.). Olives are the main local crop, and July sees a local festival celebrating the superior-quality olive oil. An excellent raisin wine similar to the "sciacchetrà" found in the Cinque Terre is produced locally. Another festival you should try not to miss is dedicated to another local speciality, wild boar with polenta. This takes place in the district of San Damiano at the beginning of September. The "Golden Mill" trophy is awarded for painting.
