Sohag Tourist Information

Sohag

Set on a rich agricultural plain bounded by the hills of the Eastern and Western deserts, SOHAG (pronounced "Sohaj") is an industrious town of 75,000 with a large Christian community and a small university. Before the conflict in Middle Egypt, Sohag made a nice, relaxed stopover and a base for visits to the nearby Red and White monasteries , or Abydos Temple, further away. Nowadays tourists are afraid to come here, despite valiant efforts by the council to woo visitors by creating an archeological museum, and a tourist village in the mountains 12km east of town (both near completion). Aside from these, Sohag hosts a huge animal market just off the Girga road, known as the Souk el-Itnayn because it's held on Monday (6am-noon), and the Moulid of Al-Aref - Sohag's patron saint - a few weeks before the nationwide feast of Eid al-Adha. Last but not least, there's a colossal staue of an ancient Egyptian princess in the town of Akhmim , just across the Nile from Sohag.
