Sarov Tourist Information
Sarov, a small pleasant town 250km of Moscow, is situated in a beautiful place in the Nizhny Novgorod region. The city of Sarov was renamed to Arzamas-16 in 1946 and became the location of the Soviet Union's nuclear weapons research and development facilities. For about 50 years it was closed for foreign visitors. On 14 August 1995, President Yeltsin signed a law, which officially changed the city's name to Sarov, its original, historical name. The town preserves the architectural ensemble of the Sarov Monastery. Seraphim Sarovsky, one of the greatest Russian saints, lived in the monastery and received people coming for his advice.
