San Francisco El Alto sits on a small plateau 8,560 feet high, with a splendid view of the Valley of Quezaltenango. On Fridays, the biggest market in Guatemala is held here. Trading activity here is more than anything related to work and the daily life of the inhabitants, so that it is easy to buy everything that Guatemalans in the highlands need, including mules and calves. Those who appreciate textiles can buy woollen blankets from Momostenango and jaspes, the fabric which Totonicapan women use for skirts.
