San Agustin Tourist Information
One of the most important and monumental archeological sites in Colombia is San Agustín, an old village located in the foothills of the Macizo Colombiano to the south of the state of Huila. This region was inhabited between the First century B.C. and the Tenth century A.D. by various Agustin Indian cultures known for their practice of different cults, in particular their funeral rites, and they left for posterity numerous archeological pieces such as statues, stone carvings, monolithic sarcophagi and petroglyphs representing humans and animals. The largest concentration of statues is found 3 kilometers or 1 ½ miles from the urban center in the Parque Arqueológico San Agustín consisting of the Bosque de las Estatuas, the Mesitas A, B, C and D, the Fuente de Lavapatas and the Alto de Lavapatas. The other archeological sites are found scattered around an area of 500 square kilometers between the municipalities of San Agustín and San Jose de Isno. Outstanding are the Alto de los Idolos, the Tablón, La Chaquira, La Pelota, Obando, El Jabón, the Alto de las Piedras, the Alto de las Guacas, the Mortiño, Quebradillas, Quinchana, La Parada, Naranjos and Lavaderos. San Agustín may be reached by road from Santa Fe Bogotá ( 529 kilometers or about 265 miles ), or by air to Neiva and then 227 kilometers by land ( 118 miles ) or take an irregular small plane to Pitalito which is 30 Kilometers away.
