alta city is the capital city of the homonimous province. Lying on Lerma a Valley, the city is situated in one of the most fertile and nicest sites ever created in this region. It is located at 1,187 meters above sea level, at the bottom of 20 de Febrero and San Bernardo Hills. Summer is mild and Winter is warm and dry, registering an anual average temperature of 22ºC which makes the city an ideal place to live or visit. " El Aybal " airport, 9 km away from the city through Nº 51 National Road connects Salta to Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Tucumán,Jujuy, and other cities; operating from time to time some international flights. One can also get to the city through Nº 9 and Nº 34 National Routes. Hispanic architecture makes the city an outstanding one in the region. The colonial spirit of the foundation remains in its houses, centenarian monuments and narrow streets framed by mountains. The touristic city tour includes sightseeings of numerous statues, visits to San Francisco Church, the Cathedral and the interesting historical and anthropological museums. In the outskirts, there are different excursions to go on , being the one called " El tren de las nubes" ( The train in the clouds) the most attractive of them all.
