Nicknamed "The Fundy City" because of its proximity to the Bay of Fundy (home to the highest tides in the world), Saint John, New Brunswick is one of Canada's most fascinating cities.
Just outside the city, visitors can walk on the floor of the ocean at the Bay of Fundy, where tides rise and drop 14 meters (48 feet) twice a day, and the currents have carved the towering rocks into unique formations. Another singular Saint John attraction is the Reversing Falls. When the Saint John River meets the Bay of Fundy's incredible high tide, the river churns and reverses direction, flowing upstream through a rocky gorge. This unique natural phenomenon is a sight you won't soon forget.
Within the city, the Old City Market is a favorite destination. Beneath a roof that resembles the inverted hull of a ship, the stalls of the market area a great place to shop for fresh lobster, meat, cheese and produce. On a walking tour of Saint John, which holds the distinction of being Canada's oldest incorporated city, a trip to the Carleton Martello Tower is a must. The Tower was begun as an advance post for Halifax during the War of 1812, but the war ended before the Tower was completed. It remains a peaceful monument to the history of an engaging and friendly city.
St. John's and its surrounding area bound with spectacular ocean, scenery, wonderful urban parks, charming streetscapes and significant historical sites. Visitors quickly discover why St. John's calls itself 'The City of Legends'.
