Quepos tourist information
Three and a half hours south of San José, the city of Quepos is one of the Central Pacific's most well-trodden destinations, not so much because it has anything of real interest to see, but rather for its proximity to tourist-magnet Parque Nacional Manual Antonio and the dozens of tour operators who run adventure trips into the raging rivers and wild mountain terrain just outside town. Tourism has definitely jump-started the economy here; sportfishing easily rakes in more money than the banana crops on which the town once depended, and the zig-zagging rows of African palms along the coast are quickly forgotten en route to raftable rivers and canopy tours. The streets are often deserted during the day when travelers are out exploring, but come sunset, doors and windows open up everywhere, and the chatter of an upbeat population mixes with the relaxing beat of music: the perfect accompaniment to a nice cold beer. If adventure tours don't fit in your budget, Manuel Antonio is a relaxing escape, and Quepos is a convenient base with more budget accommodations.
