
Puerto Natales tourist information
Puerto Natales, 247 km. northwest of Punta Arenas, together with black necked swans and seagulls, greets the visitor from its important misty dock, characteristic of this rural touristic area. It is capital of the province of Ultima Esperanza, situated by Señoret channel facing the Cordillera de los Andes. It is also the gateway to beautiful natural landscapes like the worldwide known Parque Nacional Torres del Paine, Natural Monument Cueva del Milodón, and Parque Nacional Los Glaciares, and in winter to the ski slopes in Río Turbio, or to the glaciers in Montaña Balmaceda, Serrano, or to the seven glaciers in Canal de las Montañas. From the gentle slope where it is situated, one can see Cordillera de Riesco, Maciso Paine, and the glaciers of Campo de Hielo Sur. It has a population of 15.500 inhabitants, and is the starting point to the main touristic attractions: channels Siñoret and de las Montañas, lagoons Sofía, Diana, and Dorotea, lakes Balmaceda and Toro, mounts Dorotea and Pratt, gulf Almirante Montt, islands de los Cisnes and Guanaco, ports Bories and Consuelo, dock Cristal, Avenida Costanera, Paso del Kirke, Antonio Varas peninsula, rivers Serrano and Tres Pasos, Museo D´Agostini, Bernardo O´Higgins National Park, glaciers Balmaceda and Serrano, mount Balmaceda, glacier Pío XI, Campos de Hielo Sur, and Natural Monument Cueva del Milodón. Puerto Natales is connected to Argentina by Río Turbio, a coalbearing city where an important part of the population of Puerto Natales works. In the city there is a casino, a Town Museum, the Square, with an old locomotive used in Bories industrial plant during the splendor of the Sociedad Ganadera de Tierra del Fuego founded at the beginning of the XX century. The splendid territory around the city is dominated by estancias, and the immediate chain by lots and small organic vegetable orchards. As regards touristic infraestructure, there are cafes, restaurants, a casino, the farthest south one in the world, small picturesque shops, and travel agencies offering unique tours. As regards hotels, there are big ones as well as small guest houses with personalized service. A well equipped airport joins Puerto Natales to any part of the world. The maritime access from Puerto Montt takes place once a week via ferry boat.
