Prachatice Tourist Information

This town was founded at the beginning of the 14th century at the Sumava foot-hills near the long-distance trade way, along which the salt was transported to Bohemia. The Gothic St. Jakub´s Church dominates the town. A massive fortification with ramparts, bastions and the Pisecka Gate are preserved from the period of the big economic expansion in the 16th century. Also a number of luxurious Renaissance citizen houses with "sgraffito" decorations date from that period. A school building with battlements, a unique town hall with murals, known as "chiaroscur", along with the nobly Sittra House, where the Prachatice Museum was established, the Rozmbersky House, the Husuv House, the building of a former salt-house and other constructions rank among the most significant sights of the town. In the period after the battle on the White Mountain (Bila hora), the economic development of the town was stopped and Prachatice lost the statute of the royal town. Thanks to this suppression, the former urban character of the town was preserved to present day. These are the historic heritage along with a beautiful nature of the Pisek environs, what the town takes advantage of at present. The Festival of Salt Golden Route reminds of medieval trade with salt between Prachatice and Pasov. Also the Sumava National Park is one of the attractive tourist destinations.
