Port St Johns Tourist Information
Wild Coast, this town at the mouth of the Umzimvubu River has seen many changes. It lost a lot of its lustre during the Bantustan days when it was part of the nominally independent Transkei and the hordes of affluent holidaymakers who had previously flocked there, went elsewhere.
For many years it remained an unhurried, unhassled, very African town with a number of beautiful beaches. It wasn’t long before backpackers discovered the place and many would spend weeks here – communing with the locals, doing a bit of surfing, pigging out on seafood and generally chilling out.
And, slowly, the area is regaining its reputation as a premier beach holiday spot. At present, it’s a bit of a mixed bag. You can stay in a comfortable resort and spend time in a bustling, busy African town where you can get a good insight into the way real people live in this part of the world. Port St Johns is one of the major stops on the Wild Coast Hiking Trail.
Port St Johns is about 100km from Umtata on a reasonable tarred road. The nearest airport is at Umtata, with flights only to and from Johannesburg.
